The Town of Haddam
received a $350,000 Small Cities Grant through the Connecticut Department
of Economic and Community Development (DECD). Thus, there was an opportunity
to breathe new life into an unused site and rejuvenating a metal storage
building shell into a new facility.
The Connecticut River Valley is rich in terms of natural resources, biological
eco-systems, culture and history. Thus, this project offers an opportunity
to celebrate Haddam’s contextual relationship within the natural
environment. Conceptually, the local mills, shipyards, meeting houses,
homes and farm buildings have a collective, contextual influence on the
Eco-Center’s form. As a result, the integrated use of board and batten
siding, articulated trim work, cantilevered gable entry with ship’s
wheel arch, elongated cupola/light well with weathervane establishes a
certain dialogue. Essentially, the design incorporates an assemblage of
materials and elements which act as visual cues, evoking the region’s
past history.
