The Town of East
Haddam received a $325,000 Small Cities Grant through the Connecticut Department
of Economic and Community Development (DECD). In addition, the Town also
received a $500,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grant,
along with another $200,000 in grants, thus making this project possible.
The design concept evolved through a photographic study of local mill history,
farm houses, barns, as well as resort/lodge typologies. A field with multiple
stone walls forms a pastoral setting for this senior community house. The
use of porches, supported by timber posts and beams resting on stone bases,
creates an inviting sense of entry as well as community interaction. In
addition, the intersecting gables, cupola with weathervane, window treatment,
clapboard siding and articulated trim are composed to form a New England
Lodge.
The spaces include an entry lobby, multi-purpose/dining room, kitchen,
craft/activity room, game room, exercise room, computer room, office, as
well as outdoor recreation areas. Ultimately, this 4,291 s.f. facility,
scheduled for completion in 2005, will serve the needs of East Haddam’s
senior members as a place for meetings, dining, celebration, social interaction,
and recreation.
