This historic
building was constructed in the 1780’s, with 2 major expansions during
the nineteenth century. The present owners decided to move on site, resulting
in this late twentieth century expansion. Thus, the program consisted of
a new 1300 s.f. expansion and remodeling of an existing 12 unit apartment
building.
Appearing before the Historic District Commission, FAA presented the scheme
which is a modified hybrid of the Adam and Italianate Styles. In order
for the addition to be coherent and complementary to the existing architecture,
design issues related to scale, form, fenestration, materials, colors,
and character required sensitive attention.
Thus, the solution resulted in a simple shape with a generous wrap-around
porch, stucco walls, hip roof forms with cupola, and compatible cornice,
trim and column details. Furthermore, the layout and orientation incorporate
the magnificent views of the Connecticut River.
