The program consisted
of a 15 unit condominium complex for seniors on a rural site with open
fields and wooded areas. The initial challenge was to avoid monotony and
predictable repetition. Thus, the resulting 4-cluster layout evolved into
building footprints with stepped configurations and undulating facades.
The local barns and farmhouses generated the design concept which contextually
connects with Connecticut’s pastoral vernacular vocabulary. Consequently,
the integration of building form, intersecting gable roof shapes, porches,
arched garage doors, cupolas, and weathervanes, are elements used as variations
on a theme.
