This pre-1850
house was in great need of repair. A local builder purchased the house
with the intent of remodeling. The entire interior was gutted with no plan
in place. At that point, George Fellner was hired to "come up with
a plan".
The resulting new design includes an eat-in kitchen, bathroom, laundry,
and a living room on the first floor. A new stair with a spiral landing
flows into a curved wall, leading into the master bedroom on the second
floor. There are two additional bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The juxtaposition of new white gypsum board walls with the original exposed
wood timbers offers an expression of the coexistence of the old and the
new. In addition, an existing porch was expanded incorporating lattice
work. New clapboard siding, wood shingles, skylights, and intentionally
over- scaled bay windows coherently breathe new life into the exterior
form. Consequently, the integration of old and new elements helps to formulate
a "house-reborn".
